Obituary for Shirley Miller Jackson

Shirley Miller Jackson, 97, of Springfield, died on Tuesday, February 27, 2018, in the Miami Valley Hospital. She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Lawrence W. Jackson, in 2006. She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews, cousins in Canada, and a god-daughter in Massachusetts.

Shirley, a native of Detroit, Michigan, served her country in World War II by working as a secretary in the Naval offices on Ford Island in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Later she was in the vanguard of adult students returning to school. She received her B.S. in Education at the age of 37 and became a sixth-grade teacher in Warder Park School. She also taught Sunday School and sang in the choir of Grace Lutheran Church in Springfield, as well as in various other churches after leaving Springfield in 1963 to accompany her husband Larry to his job as Treasurer at Bates College, Lewiston, Maine. She and Larry returned to Springfield in 1994 after living and working in New England and Upstate New York for 31 years. In retirement, she read for the blind and volunteered in libraries, particularly the genealogical sections which inspired her to trace the family trees on both sides. She loved to read and enjoyed cooking and baking, being an avid follower of Julia Child in her early days. Her hobbies were doing needlepoint and embroidery, particularly cross-stitch and crewel which she considered painting with yarn. In 2007 Shirley developed wet Macular Degeneration which involves a loss of eyesight. She was most grateful to Dr. Gary J. Lau for his treatments which kept her seeing all these years.

A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, March 3, 2018, at 12:00 p.m. in the LITTLETON & RUE FUNERAL HOME.

Burial will follow in the Ferncliff Cemetery.

Flowers are gratefully declined, but those wishing to remember Shirley may make memorial contributions in her name to the Scholarship Fund at the High Street United Methodist Church, 230 E. High St., Springfield, OH 45505.
