Obituary for Reed P. Jewett

Reed Phillips Jewett passed away April 17, 2018. Mr. Jewett was born in Steubenville Ohio in 1932 and was a practicing attorney in Springfield for 50 years. He was a United States Navy veteran, serving on board the USS LST-391 (Korean War) where he crossed the Arctic Circle, and also played baseball for the U.S. Navy.

Mr. Jewett began his law career as an associate in a private practice, moving quickly to become a Springfield assistant city prosecutor and assistant law director. Soon after, he became an assistant attorney general for two years, and then returned to Springfield to open his own law practice. While pursuing his career, he and his wife, Velma Jean (Wood) Jewett, raised seven children. Mr. Jewett was a fixture of the Springfield legal community and was honored as a 50-year practitioner by the Ohio State Bar Association and the Clark County Bar Association in 2013, retiring soon after.

He was a 32nd Degree Mason, and a 52-year member of the Shriners, including acting as president, a 55-year member of BPO Elks Lodge 51, lifetime member of the VFW, American Legion Post 6, Machinist’s Union Club, Board of Directors Springfield Chamber of Commerce.

Married to Velma Jean (Wood) Jewett until her passing in 2003 and preceded in death by one sister, Carol (Jewett) Sears. He is survived by seven children, (Sabrina (Nance Parent) Jewett, Kevin (Donna) Jewett, Renee (Richard) Hiles, Lori Jewett-(Jean) Donzello, Lisa Jewett, Shelly (William) Hoffman, and Jeri Jewett-(Thomas)Tennant; 13 grandchildren (Lydia Jewett, Kyle Jewett, Jessie Jewett, John Jewett, Rick Hiles, Olivia Hiles, Emma Jewett-Donzello, Elizabeth Jewett-Donzello, Lucy Yaw, Reed Buxton, Will Hoffman, Owen Tennant, Jill Tennant, four nieces and several great-nieces/nephews.

Services will be private. The family extends a special thanks to the Masonic Home community, residents and many staff who enriched his life with their friendship and support.
