Obituary for Phyllis A. Chilton

Phyllis A. Chilton, 63, of Springfield departed this life Friday July 21, 2017. She was born on October 05, 1953, the daughter of the late James and Susie Chilton. She leaves to cherish her memory, her son Austin Chilton.

Phyllis expressed her sense of adventure through travelling the world including Africa, Europe, Panama, Mediterranean, and the Caribbean. She also enjoyed travelling in the United States and lived in Las Vegas for a period of time. She demonstrated her passion for other cultures through cooking and tasting other cuisines. She liked to garden. She had an interest in researching her family history and exploring her ancestry. Phyllis had a lifelong commitment to education expressed through her employment and retirement from Central State University where she worked in Math, Chemistry, and Water Resources departments. She demonstrated her passion for learning as both a student and teacher of Spanish.

Although preceded in death by her parents, brother Richard L. Chilton, and dear friend Eleanor Wade, Phyllis has left a large family to carry on her memory including brothers James E. Chilton, Jr., Donald L. (Karen) Chilton, Paul D. (Joyce) Chilton, Marshell (Jackie) Chilton, and Alfred H. (Diane) Chilton; sisters Lee (Bruce) Chilton- Davis and Marlene Walker. A host of nieces and nephews Rene’ Chilton, Jessica Chilton, Ronald Gordon, Chris Chilton, Cindy Lawson, Sandy Anderson, Alffie Chilton, Donita Thompson, Nickey Brown, Amber Thompson, Cole Chilton, Autumn Davis Hammonds, James Chilton, Tyler Chilton, Scott Chilton, Cara Chilton and Belinda Isaac. Several great nieces and nephews and special friends Marquitta Mills, Karen Howard, and Angie Freeman.

A celebration of Phyllis’ life will be held at 6:00 p.m. Thursday in St. John Missionary Baptist Church with Pastor Ernest Brown officiating. The family will receive friends beginning at 4:30 p.m. until the time of service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Making Strides Against Breast Cancer.
