Obituary for Mary Schmidt Gray

Mary Schmidt Gray, 92, of Hilton Head Island, SC, passed away Monday, October 2, 2017. Mary was born in Springfield, Ohio on January 20, 1925, the daughter of Clarence and Helen (Frey) Schmidt. She was married to Joseph L. Gray for 58 years until his death in 2005. Mary and Joe lived in Springfield, Ohio until 1978 when Joe took an early retirement and they moved to Sea Pines on Hilton Head Island, SC. In 2003, they moved to The Seabrook Retirement Center on Hilton Head. Mary moved into Fraser Health Center in 2015 and resided there until her death. She is survived by her three daughters, Eleanor (Barry) Ratliff, Katherine (Phil) Reeves and Susan (Mark) Barlow; eight grandchildren; five great grandchildren; niece Lynn McLaughlin; and nephew, Richard Furay.

Mary was a homemaker and tireless volunteer her whole life. While in Ohio she volunteered with the P.T.A., Girl Scouts, Art League, Junior Women’s Club, Red Cross, and Covenant Presbyterian Church. After retiring to Hilton Head, she became involved with the Sea Pines Preserve, Audubon Society, Volunteers in Medicine, Hilton Head Hospital, Gourmet Club, and the MCI Heritage Golf Classic.

A private family graveside service will be held in Springfield, Ohio on October 14, 2017. A memorial service at the Seabrook on Hilton Head will be on Saturday, November 4 at 2:00 p.m.
