Obituary for Dr. John Robert Essig

Dr. John Robert (Bob) Essig, 89, died on Thursday September 21, 2017. He was born to Bertha and J. Fred Essig in Olathe, Colorado on November 21, 1927. He had lived in the Springfield area for the past 57 years.  
Bob was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 64 years, Marilyn, and his siblings Dr. Garth Essig and Joann Klinko. He was a loving husband, father, brother, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Hisfaith in the Lord Jesus motivated him to serve others who were in need. He was gracious and freely gave of his time and money. Bob loved to tell a good joke and had a sense of humor even when his health was in decline. Many generations in the family and friends are grateful to Bob for his example.
Bob earned degrees from Hiram College (BS in Biology) and Ohio State University (MD) and later specialized in Anesthesiology. He practiced anesthesiology at Springfield Community Hospital for over 30 years, which included serving as Chief of Staff and Medical Director of the Intensive Care Unit. Bob was a dedicated and caring physician. He was respected and loved by his medical colleagues and patients. Bob served in the U.S. Army as a Technician and Sergeant. He was honorably discharged in 1947.
Bob had diverse interests. He grew up in Colorado, and loved the outdoors, hunting and fishing. Bob enjoyed listening to music and played a variety of instruments including the piano, organ, and ukulele. He and Marilyn were regular concertgoers. Bob loved to fix things in his basement workshop.  He was a skilled carpenter and an excellent photographer. He inspired many to appreciate the value of craftsmanship and a job well done. He loved vacationing with his family.  Incredible memories were created in places like Clear Lake, cross country treks in his RV’s, Michigan, Smokey Mountains, and Israel.
Bob was a longtime member of Trinity Lutheran church. He and Marilyn were committed to the church community. They were actively involved in Bible studies, church events and sang in the choir.  Bob gave generously to foundations that advanced the work of many churches in the community and abroad.
In the final years of his life, Bob was in the care of Amy King, Jill Clingenpeel, Dana Beckner, Amy Bail, Breon Oliver, Natalie Oliver, Shawn Fagan, Jocelyn Whitmore and numerous doctors, nurses and other health care providers. The family is most grateful for their dedicated and loving service. 
Bob is survived by his children, David (Debbie) Essig, Lora (Paul) Johnston, John (Betsy) Essig, Shari (Keith) Davis; grandchildren, Timothy (Leigh) Essig, Christopher (Ashley), Sarah (Dan) Hagensen, Daniel (Katherine) Essig, Katelyn (Noah) Ward, Joshua (Hannah) Davis, Matthew (Elisa) Davis, Jason (Lindsey) Davis, Michael Essig; and great-grandchildren, Jeremiah Essig, Jed Essig, Conner Essig, Peter Essig, Isabel Essig, Wesley Essig, Norah Essig, Faith Hagensen, Ellie Essig, Zoe Davis, Ahmya Hagensen, Jack Davis and Atticus Essig. He is also survived by beloved nieces and nephews and their families.
Bob will be missed by all who knew and loved him. 
A gathering of family and friends will be held on Monday, September 25th, from 5 – 8 PM in the Littleton & Rue Funeral Home. Funeral services will begin Tuesday, September 26th at 10:00 AM at Fellowship Christian Church, Springfield, OH with Pastor Chad Wilson officiating. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery.
