Obituary for Dr. James R. Miller

Beloved father and grandfather, Dr. James Robert Miller, 80, passed away peacefully on January 7, 2018, surrounded by his family after a sudden illness.

Born in Springfield, he attended Springfield High School. After completing dental school at OSU, he married Marilyn Umbaugh, July 15, 1961. He served for three years in the US Army. After graduating in Orthodontics, he and Marilyn returned to Springfield to join Marilyn’s father Scotty and brother Richard Umbaugh’s Orthodontics practice.

He was an active member of Jaycees, Kiwanis, served on the Clark County Health Department Board, Mad River Dental Society, Great Lakes Dental Society, and the Board of Trustees of the Heritage Center. He and Marilyn volunteered for many years at the Springfield Summer Arts Festival, where he also participated in a number of the musical productions. He was a member of High Street United Methodist Church where he sang in the choir for decades. He also enjoyed singing with the Vintage Voices and the Sprylighters.

An avid hiker, sailor, skier and gardener, he shared his love of nature and out of doors with his family and friends and often supported his wife’s leadership in Girl Scouts.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn, and his sister Jean Miller Dickey and brother-in-law Coe Dickey.

Surviving him are his children, Lauren (and Bruce) Johnson of Acton, MA, Kathryn (and David) Biondi of Mesa, AZ, and Richard (and Maria Richa) Miller of New York, NY and six grandchildren, Elena, Maia and Corinne Johnson, Trey and Lucia Biondi and Marisol Miller-Richa, his in-laws Richard and Darlene Umbaugh, and many nieces and nephews to cherish his memory.

His family and friends will miss his joy for life and laughter. Join us in celebrating his life at his visitation and memorial service.
