Obituary for Claudia E. (King) Jones

Claudia E. (King) Jones, of Springfield, passed away in her home, surrounded by her family on August 8, 2017, following a brief and courageous battle against cancer. Claudia’s journey began on April 23, 1948 in Denver, Colorado to the late Donald King and Mary Jane (Kern) McBlane.
Claudia was a graduate of Springfield South High, class of 1966. She went on to attend Bowling Green State University, and ultimately graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology from Wright State University. Claudia began her career in social work at Belle Manor Nursing Home in New Carlisle. She also spent many years working at Community Hospital in Springfield, eventually serving as the Director of Social Services. During this time, she also attended The Ohio State University to obtain her Master’s degree in Social Work.

Claudia was always passionate and driven to work in geriatric care. She flourished when given the opportunity to develop, implement, and provide direct services at the Pathway Center for Alzheimer’s Care located on the Ohio Masonic Home campus. Upon leaving, Claudia continued in her career to provide exceptional care, genuine compassion, and seemingly tireless energy and commitment to patients and family members at St. John’s Center in Springfield. Claudia spent the last years of her career with Community Mercy Hospice where she comforted individuals and families at the end of their life journeys. She attributed her experiences gained while working with hospice to her ability to not only accept, but also be at peace with her diagnosis of terminal cancer.

Claudia went above and beyond for the good of others. She exuded strength and independence, along with an infectious smile and ability to make even the toughest person feel at ease in her presence. Claudia believed in people, she believed in equality, community, peace, and unity. Her strength and courage will forever live on in those who love her.

Claudia is survived by her husband of 48 years, Ronald L. Jones, and daughters Megan (Tim) Newell, Independence, Oregon, and Amy Jones (Solomon Islam), Englewood, Ohio. She is also the very proud “Nan”/ “Nanny” of four grandchildren: Asher, Ainsley, and Poppy Newell of Independence Oregon as well as Liam Jones of Englewood, Ohio. She is also survived by brother, Sheldon E. King (Mary Ellen Davis) of Colorado Springs, Colorado, sister Penny McBlane Ake of Springfield, Ohio, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Claudia also leaves behind several close, lifelong friends, including her best friend, Penny (Richard) Young. She was preceded in death by her father, Donald King, mother and stepfather Samuel and Mary Jane (Kern) McBlane and in laws.

Claudia will forever be known as a kind, caring, and compassionate giver. She was always able to provide a laugh to anyone, even when it was at her own expense. She was a die-hard fan of The Ohio State Buckeyes and was able to attend her first game last season. After retirement, she was able to focus on herself. She enjoyed taking numerous classes at the YMCA, spending time with her friends and family, and especially gardening. In the last years of her life, she became a “Master Gardener”.

The family would like to extend a gracious, warm appreciation to everyone who brought food, visited, or sent well wishes to Claudia. Also, a very special thank you to Etta Woods and Katie De Laet for everything. We could not have made this journey as a family without the two of you. A big thank you to Hospice of Dayton and the Springfield Cancer Center for all of the uplifting peace you brought to Claudia.

A gathering of family and friends will be held from 2:00 to 3:30 on Saturday, August 19 at The First United Church of Christ (2000 E. High, Springfield) where Claudia was a lifetime member. A Memorial Service celebrating Claudia’s life will begin at 3:30 with a reception to follow.

Memorial donations may be made to the Masters Gardeners of Clark County Snyder Park Gardens & Arboretum Fund, P.O. Box 158, Springfield, OH 45501. This project was near and dear to Claudia’s heart as she actively involved in the planning and implementation.
