Obituary for Charles J. Townsend M.D.

CHARLES J. TOWNSEND M.D., 94, of Springfield passed away Friday, December 22, 2017 in the Springfield Regional Medical Center. He was born on February 24, 1923 at Masten’s Corner, Felton, Delaware to William Elijah and Fannie Luff Townsend. He served in the U.S. Army from 1943-1946 at Fort Bragg, N.C. in the 13th Airborne Glider Platoon where he went into the Army specialized medical training program. He went back to the University of Delaware in 1946, then on to the University of Richmond, VA in 1947 where he graduated in 1950 with a B.S. in chemistry with academic honors, Phi Beta Kappa. He entered medical school at the medical college of Virginia in 1949, graduating in 1953. He moved to Springfield in June of 1953 and did his internship at Mercy Hospital under the mentorship of A. Richard Kent and Morris B. Martin. He started his private medical practice on July 1, 1954. He was called back into the Army at Fort Eustis, VA from 1956-1958, then came back to Springfield and practiced medicine until he retired January 31, 1990.

He was a member of the following: High Street United Methodist Church, Springfield Country Club, Clark County Medical Society, Ohio State Medical Society, Southern Medical Association, American College of Physicians, Kiwanis International, Past President, Clark County Heart Association, volunteer faculty at Wright State University, Associate Professor of Medicine for over 25 years at Mercy Hospital, Past President of Ridgewood School Association, Past President of Springfield Archeological Society, Past President of Spring Creek Investment Club, member of H.S. Kissell Masonic Lodge #674, 32nd Degree Mason of the Scottish Rite Valley of Dayton, Clark County Shrine Club and Antioch Shrine Club. Other interests were his family, traveling, golf and tenor saxophone where he played in a local physicians group called “The Band-Aides.”

He was preceded in death by his brother, William Luff Townsend, son-in-law, John D. LeFevre II and son, Charles J. Townsend Jr. He is survived by the love of his life and wife of 74 years, Rosell Marie Townsend; daughters, Holly LeFevre (partner, Anders Dynge) and Terri Alford (husband, Randy); four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. The family would like to thank the staff at Hearth & Home on Harding Rd. and Hospice at Springfield Regional Medical Center for their compassionate care.

A memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family at LITTLETON & RUE FUNERAL HOME. Memorial contributions may be made to Hollandia Gardens Association, P.O. Box 235, Spfld. OH 45501 or a charity of choice.
