Obituary for Betty Lou Townley

Betty Lou Townley, 83, of Springfield, formerly of Centerville, passed away on Saturday, October 28, 2017 in Oakwood Village. She was born on April 5, 1934, in Santa Rosa, California, the daughter of the late Eber L. and Lillian E. (French) Ale. Betty Lou is survived by her husband of 61 years, Edgar S. “Ted” Townley. She graduated from East Orange School of Nursing in New Jersey and received her Master’s Degree in Hospital Administration from Xavier University. She was in health care most of her life. She worked at Miami Valley Hospital and retired from Upper Valley Medical Center in Troy. Betty Lou later served as a consultant for the Joint Commission on Health Care Service (a non-profit accreditation program). In addition to her career in health care, in 1973 she co-founded the Therapeutic Riding Institute (TRI). It’s mission: “To enhance lives by providing accredited therapeutic equine experiences in a safe, fun and compassionate environment.” She and Ted loved to travel and drive across country to California and to New York. Betty Lou loved art, theatre and appeared in several commercials. She is also survived by three daughters: Beth (Rob) Vogt of Columbus, Cindy (Scott) Stuart of Beavercreek, and Cari (John) Roeder of Springfield; four grandchildren: Steve and Adam Roeder, Lauren and Patrick Stuart; eight great grandchildren, and one brother, Richard L. (Ellen) Ale of Flagstaff, Arizona. Private services will be held by the family. Memorial contributions may be made to TRI through triohio.org.
